IHM is an ancient art:

The origins of Indian Head Massage (IHM) lie in the traditional Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda. This stresses the importance of the holistic principle of balancing the body, mind and spirit. The Ayurvedic approach to life is to recognise your true nature and to live according to your true self.

Even today Indian infants receive a daily massage from birth to keep them in good health. Between the ages of 3 and 6 they are taught to share a massage with family members on a regular basis. Young children generally love their heads being massaged.

Women in Indian families use head massage as part of their grooming routine. Barbers also use similar skills offering scalp massage or Champi - a Hindi word meaning 'having your head massaged'. This became the Western word 'shampoo'.

IHM was introduced to the West in 1982 by Mr Narendra Mehta who came to England to train as a physiotherapist. He was disappointed to find massage missing from this discipline so he devised a therapy which concentrated on the head but also included neck, shoulders and upper arms.

IHM can be relaxing or invigorating. Since everyone is unique so then are the effects of the massage. It is extremely safe and effective and the power of touch can be so therapeutic. There is no need to remove clothing, except for bulky overgarments. It can be done anywhere,so would be invaluable for busy people in offices, banks, schools, hospitals to name but a few places. Imagine a lunch hour during which you experienced a head massage! You could return to work refreshed ,relaxed and ready to start anew. Bosses please take note!!  You could gain Brownie points for looking after your staff so well.

A session usually lasts between half and three-quarters of an hour but a mini-session may only take around 20 minutes .
